Sometimes you want to bring the kitchen sink and sometimes you don’t. For those times with when you don’t, you may decide to carry only a pocket knife, but hold up for just a second. You can fill that pocket knife role and still have a few tools. The options listed below may not get you the best of both worlds but it’s a good compromise when size and weight constraints are a concern.

#1  Leatherman Skeletool CX

At any given time Leatherman has three to six different Skeletool models to choose from, which means if you like the general features of the Skeletool there is probably one that fits your style and/or specific needs. Some of these are limited edition models that are really cool and worth checking out.

The Skeletool is Ultra-lightweight at only 5oz, you’ll forget you even have it in your pocket, but when you’re in need it’s right there waiting. If pocket carry is not your thing then the integrated carabiner allows you to clip it to a belt loop or backpack or anywhere else you find convenient.

The Skeletool’s tool-set is small but don’t let that fool you, its packed with some very useful tools and features that won’t disappoint.

Tools

  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Regular Pliers
  • Wire Cutters
  • Hard Wire Cutter
  •  2.6″ Knife
  • Bottle Opener
  • Large Bit Driver

Features

  • Closed Length – 4″
  • Locking Blade
  • One-Handed Operation
  • Replaceable Pocket Clip
  • Integrated Carabiner
  • Handle Bit Storage

All of these tools and features are great but why is the Skeletool CX my favorite? It really comes down to the knife. The CX comes with a blade made from 154CM Stainless Steel. 154CM is a great upgrade over the 420HC which is the standard steel used in most of Leatherman’s models. Gerber Crucial

Also weighing in at 5oz. this offering from Gerber has some great features for such a small lightweight multi-tool. With all the tool basics covered it’s very similar to the Skeletool, but where the Crucial shines is its ultra-fine needle nose pliers. If you find yourself needing precision needle nose pliers and the knife blade is of less concern, this may be a better choice for you.
